Your Donation is Baking a Better World

To understand Humanity for Relief and Development (HRD), you first have to know their story. A few years ago, Maeen Ali, the founder and CEO, received the worst phone call of his life. His brother passed away in the war in Yemen, leaving behind his wife and five children. This devastating war, which began in 2014, created the “largest humanitarian crisis in the world” according to the United Nations. Food was scarce, and his sister’s family, along with thousands of others, struggled to survive.

Maeen had no time to raise money. He spent $30,000 out of his own pocket to build a bakery that gave free bread to his brother’s family and the surrounding community. When Maeen was growing up in Yemen, he used to only get one piece of bread per day. That’s all he had to eat. If he lost it, he would have to wait until the next day. He knows what it means to be hungry, and he founded Mercy Bakery on a simple idea: everyone should have access to the most basic form of sustenance– bread.

Luckily, Allah blessed him and donations poured in worldwide. The project was a huge success! Neighboring communities began asking when they would get their bakery. Now, HRD has eleven bakeries in Yemen and one in Pakistan. One loaf at a time, they are baking a better world.

In addition to food aid, HRD renovated a beautiful orphanage and school that serves over 600 children. They built clean water infrastructure that spares women and children hours each day that used to be spent carrying water from the bottom of their mountain. HRD also funds medical clinics and operations; refugee support; food carts for individuals to run their own small businesses; home renovations and job training; schools; and much-needed warmth during cold winters.
